Very busy semester. In addition to 19 credits of class I'm doing a radio show and being in a real band that plays shows and writing a lot and doing reading shows, and innumerable et ceteras. I know this one has a lot of death metal in it, sorry if that's not your thing. There's an Andrew Bird track in the middle of it all to make up for it. That Combat Astronomy song is my favorite song of right now. The final song is a rough demo from my new band.Hopefully I'll get a new show up sooner than this one happened. -Deniz Comments[8] |

Since the last podcast, I made a record with Sandpaper Handjob which this show starts with a track from (and you can download here), started a 19-credit semester with class nine to five every day, read the first half of The Recognitions by William Gaddis, and was hired to blog (you can read it here). Wed, 14 May 2008 What's this? An episode with a theme for once?Inspired by last episode's accidental juxtaposition of two songs beginning with O or Oh (O'Appalachia and Oh, Heaven Isn't Real), I dug through my iTunes to find every song I have beginning with O or Oh, and this is the best of about 3 and a half hours of material. I think it's equally interesting as a look at what sorts of musicians put "Oh" at the start of song titles and as a look at what kind of stuff I have hanging out in the corners of my iTunes.I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed putting it together. In this episode:Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh So Insistent Oh Light Of My Heart O Silent Bed Oh My Fucking God Oh Mary Don't You Weep Oh Fog, Oh Dew O SolitudebyFood For Animals (Oh Oh Oh) Fugazi (Oh) Andrew Bird (Oh So Insistent) Ayuo (Oh Light Of My Heart) Pedestrian (O Silent Bed) Strapping Young Lad (Oh My Fucking God) Mississippi John Hurt (Oh Mary Don't You Weep) Skyforger (Oh Fog, Oh Dew) Pantheist (O Solitude) Comments[0] |

Fri, 29 February 2008 I really like making these. Definitely more pleasant than when I had to force a speech every episode. See when I started this thing I was in the middle of nowhere and just wanted a space in which to establish myself, but now I'm surrounded by people I can talk to about the serious shit which is much more rewarding than sending off these salvos into the anonymous void and so the reason I was doing this has gone. But I've replaced that reason with a different one.As you can hear.In this episode:Sex Craft episode 2 Sex Craft episode 1 Wernicke's Aphasia Atari 2600 ad The old Pac-Mac cartoon Donkey Kong ad Zelda ad Kirby's Dream Land - Green Greens Charles Bukowski - The Night I Killed Tommy Blue Scholars - Bruise Brothers Channels - Mayday Behold... Sat, 13 January 2007 Tracks: Mono - Yearning TV On The Radio - Playhouses Ben Allison - Tricky Dick The Advantage - Metroid: Kraid's Lair The Evens - Everybody Knows Joe Lally - All Must Pay Islands - Rough Gem Maritime - People, The Vehicles Latterman - 'Dozer Rage These Arms Are Snakes - Mescaline Eyes Subtle - Midas Gutz Liars - The Other Side Of Mt. Heart AttackMono - You Are ThereThe only post-rock record on my list, so what? Mogwai's newest is absolutely brilliant and fatally flawed. Laura just doesn't interest me that much. Gregor Samsa is really damn good, but I don't feel like listening to it more than once or twice. Etc etc etc. Mono are glacial like for real, but when they blow up, they make you remember it. Their songs are all very, very long, but if you have the attention span they'll reward you. Also, they're from Japan, and that's cool, right?TV On The Radio - Return To Cookie MountainYou knew this was on here. Come on. This record is damn near perfect. Every song is edgy, anxious, and just won't let the fuck go of you, even if this was a conventional pop record it would be astounding how good the songwriting is, but the dense, noisy production takes it over the top. Oh yeah, and best vocalist in pop music today? Probably.Ben Allison - Cowboy JusticeI like jazz! This is good jazz! Contemporary post-bop that isn't afraid to rock out, with sparse guitar-drums-bass-trumpet arrangements that bring some serious folk and rock influences in. Good times. The Advantage - Elf-TitledThey play entirely covers of NES music. And it's good! Who would've thought? The drummer plays guitar for Hella, and his tight polyrhythms are what make this band work. Engaging, and danceable, and entirely worthwhile even if you've never heard any of the songs before. Fuck the Minibosses, this is the real shit. Much, much more than nostalgia. The Evens - Get EvensHey, remember Fugazi? Ian MacKaye is older now, but he and his wife can still write great fucking songs. Sensitive but pissed off indie-pop duets with that elusive DC sound.Joe Lally - There To HereHey, remember Fugazi? Joe Lally is older now, but he can still write great fucking songs. Sparse, almost ambient drum-and-bass tracks with great, great lyrics.Islands - Return To The SeaNick Diamonds returns post-Unicorns in fine form. Musically, this is very upbeat and layered, with strings, horns, funky-ass bass, and an assortment of fucked little instruments contribute to a full and complex sound. Lyrically, this is absurd, abstract, and damn funny. As a package, it's one of the most fun record of the year. Bounce around like children! Do it!Maritime - We, The VehiclesThis is probably only on the list because I have the biggest fucking boner for The Promise Ring, but it's a solid record nonetheless. Davey von Bohlen doesn't sound like his voice will break any second anymore, but he can still write upbeat pop songs that don't make you feel ashamed for liking them.Latterman - ...We Are Still AliveLots of good punk rock records this year (None More Black, Lawrence Arms, Dead To Me, The Falcon, etc), but they all felt flawed or incomplete in their own little ways, and this record is so fucking consistent and solid. Sure, it sounds pretty much exactly like their last album, but their last album sounded really fucking good, so who cares? Driving and positive, this makes you feel like jumping on a bed and yelling, in a really, really good way. These Arms Are Snakes - EasterTAAS finally prove that they are worth knowing about for reasons beyond "members of Botch." These songs aren't abrasive at all, but are so fucking menacing. Sometimes their guitars and drums and vocals sound like clattering machinery. Good implementation of keyboards as well, that's very rare in menacing music. They usually just end up being cheesy.Subtle - for hero: for foolDoseone's voice on this record is fucking incredible. His usual nasal falsetto and stutter is in full form, but he's got a new deep, low, powerful growl that you just can't believe comes from the same guy. The production is so dense I have no idea what's going on most of the time, but really this is the Doseone show, let's be serious. And this is probably the best hip-hop vocal performance by anyone, ever, no joke. Lyrics are just breathtaking as well.Liars - Drum's Not DeadTribal drumming and layered drones over obtuse vocals? Sweet! Liars have made a career out of spite for the listener, but now they've gotten accessible, and damn is it good! The first nine tracks lull you into a meditative state, and then they bust out the closer, which forcibly makes you believe that everything, ever, will be okay. Such a good feeling, this record.Enjoy! -Deniz Comments[1] |
Mon, 8 January 2007 Tracks: Russian Circles - Carpe Made Out Of Babies - Proud To Drown Isis - Wrists Of Kings The Sword - Barael's Blade Melvins - The Hawk The Blood Brothers - Vital Beach Genghis Tron - Dead Mountain Mouth Converge - No Heroes Daughters - Fiery Harvey Milk - Love Swing Mastodon - Capillarian Crest Pyramids - Lucid Dysrhythmia - Seal/Breaker/VoidRussian Circles – EnterVery powerful music. Expansive, post-rock-ish metal in the vein of Pelican (sort-of) that is focused around the juxtaposition of ethereal melody and thick, driving riffs. I’ve never heard a band nail dynamic shifts like this one. Epic and beautiful while retaining that metal groove.Made Out Of Babies – CowardCreepy as all fuck. This is music that is honestly frightening. It’s easy to ignore everything but Julie Christmas’ entrancing and terrifying voice, impish and vile, but behind it is some incredibly solid post-hardcore. A challenging listen, and not for everyone, but if you’re looking for “extreme music that actually offers something offputting, you’ve gotta hear this.Isis – In The Absence of TruthIsis are not physically capable of making a bad record. Although this record is a change in tone and style from previous releases, it is nevertheless relentlessly solid, by turns chilling, entrancing, and utterly intense. Their songs no longer have the light-to-heavy dynamic that attracted so many to them in the past, opting instead for songs that, while equally expansive, are mostly consistent in their trancelike groove. The Sword – Age Of WintersA debut record coming off of no hype, this one took everyone by surprise. Yes, the lyrics are silly D&D tripe, but do you really care? Accusations of being nothing more than a Black Sabbath clone are completely unfounded, while this band isn’t the most original they draw their influences from a wide variety of metal, and you’ll find just as many stoner and thrash elements as doomy grooves. Their riffs are like mountains, and I can’t imagine anybody not enjoying this unless they were really trying hard not to.Melvins – (a) Senile AnimalI’ve never been into the Melvins very hard. Sure, Bullhead, Houdini, and Stoner Witch are great records, but the band’s output is way too haphazard and inconsistent for me to be a dedicated fan. So when I heard they had a new record out, I wasn’t particularly excited. Then I heard that Big Business had joined the band, giving them great bass, double vocalists, and two drummers. The sobering influence of their new members is obvious in the songwriting, the group’s most consistent and conventional in years. Usually I use conventional as an insult, but in this case it just means they eschew their usual noodling for some down-to-business shredding. Amazing riffs, amazing hooks and amazing beats is all you need to know about this record. The Blood Brothers – Young MachetesThis band gets a ton of hatred, 100% undeserved. Yes, a substantial portion of their fanbase is teenage girls. Yes, they’re artsy and pretentious. Yes, they’re ridiculously talented. Yes, they know how to make their songs catchy as hell and genuinely disturbing. I had never heard a record that honestly freaked me out while making me want to dance at the same time until this one came around. Twisted, disturbing, and utterly brilliant. Naysayers, get your ears checked.Genghis Tron – Dead Mountain MouthGenghis Tron’s debut EP, Cloak Of Love, was a fun but gimmicky combination of electronica and grind. Intriguing, but hard to take seriously. For their debut full-length, they’ve taken their style and made it into something fluid and strangely pretty, an unexpectedly mature record. I can’t really describe why it works, it just does. There are ridiculous tapping riffs, and long sections of melodic keyboards, and they work well together. I never would’ve thought.Converge – No HeroesOkay, did you seriously not expect this record to be awesome? Converge are consistently the singular most talented and creative songwriters in the hardcore scene, and with every record they’ve put out they’ve topped the previous one. This is no exception. It completes their three-album cycle of perfection beginning with Jane Doe and continuing through You Fail Me. This is pretty much as good as it gets. If you don’t already have this and love it, you’ve got some serious catching up to do.Daughters – Hell SongsI was unimpressed with Daughters’ debut record, Canada Songs. It had a bit of spark, but it was buried under uninspired spazz-grind, and for every piece of shining creativity, it suffered by unneeded adherence to genre conventions. When Hydra Head announced it was releasing their new record, however, I knew they would put out something worthwhile, and Hell Songs is it. I have no earthly idea why there is so much fan backlash against this record. To better suit their jittery, neurotic instrumentation, they’ve completely changed their vocal style, discarding their tired screams for a jittery, neurotic, bluesy drawl. You’ve gotta hear it to believe it.Harvey Milk – Special WishesI have no idea how to even begin describing this band. Very few of the songs on this record sound similar, but they make sense together. The music is usually sludgy, but occasionally explodes into bursts of triumphant southern-rock riffing. The vocals are an uncontrolled groan like I’ve never heard before in my life. The passion and intensity behind this record are unmatchable. You, personally, should own this record.Mastodon – Blood MountainI hated this record the first time I heard it. Like, HATED. It took me months to come to terms with the fact that this is the new Mastodon record. After producing the mountainous, crushing masterpiece Remission and the slightly disappointing but still vaguely huge and sorta heavy Leviathan, Mastodon have made a record that is, well, silly. And pretty stupid. That said, this record is positively bursting with inspired riffs, lightning-fast drumbeats, catchy hooks, and technical proficiency like you’ve never seen. So it’s not serious. So what? Sometimes it’s okay just to be fun.Pyramids – Following The Tracks, Forcing Motion Through PhasesUsually, I don’t like “concept albums. That tends to be code for ridiculous ballads and a bunch of claptrap about “characters and “storylines backed up by lyrics that sound like sixth graders trying to be “abstract. That is not the case for this record. Detailing a semi-metaphorical introspective train ride with intelligent and deft use of language, this is one of the only records I’ve ever heard whose lyrics make sense when read as poetry. The music is wonderfully-composed as well, and though it is a scant 7 tracks, it functions as one coherent whole. Screamo with heavy emphasis on post-rock elements!Dysrhythmia – Barriers And PassagesEntirely instrumental, and entirely engaging. Most instrumental bands drag at points, but Dysrhythmia just keep powering ahead, keeping you constantly engaged. Polyrhythms like you’ve never imagined! Six-string bass over guitar that sounds kinda like Steve Albini’s guitar in Shellac, if Shellac was an absurdly technical metal band, and great drums too.More to come. Be afraid. -Deniz Comments[0] |

Sun, 29 October 2006 In this episode: As promised, a super-double-bonus mixtape this weekend. I love every song in this one passionately. Which is different from every other mixtape I've ever made... how? I saw Islands since last time I talked to you, and it was fucking amazing. Maybe I'll talk at you about it next week? Maybe not? If you ever get the chance to see them, do it. Ben Allison and Medicine Wheel - Riding The Nuclear Tiger This is the title track from one of my favorite Ben Allison records. His Medicine Wheel quintet is pretty mad hot. Allison is a bassist/composer who I found out about through On The Media of all places, and I love his shit. Yes, I'm into jazz. Sorry it took so long for me to get some on the show. Anyway, the drummer on this track is the shit, and in general so is the rest of the track as well. Hurray. If you like what you hear, check out the record that this song comes from as well as his record "Cowboy Justice." I'll try to play something from that one sometime, although I'm hesitant to play jazz on this show. Doesn't seem like there's much of an audience. Converge - No Heroes This is the title track from their new record, which you'll be hearing tracks from on the next five shows as part of an ill-conceived effort to bully you into purchasing it. It's good times, album of the year style. This song is so fucking fast, and so fucking intense, and muscle-spasm-inducing-good! Themselves - It's Them Oh abstract art-rap! I love you! Doseone's voice is just straight-up incredible, and the production is neat. Both of their records (Them and the no music.) are really worth getting, consider it if you like this. "It's not actually bad rap, I just don't feel it. There, I said it." Harvey Milk - I've Got A Love A friend of mine here turned me onto these guys, and they're incredible. A lot of the time they sound like Lynyrd Skynyrd if they were ungodly heavy and crushingly melancholy. This song isn't really like that, but you'll deal. I'm playing a few more tracks by them in the future, and I think you'll see what I'm talking about on at least one of them. They're hella-underground, go support them. Red Sparowes - Like the howling glory of the darkest winds, this voice was thunderous and the words holy, tangling their way around our hearts and clutching our innocent awe. I know the song title is ridiculously long and pretentious, but they're instrumental and the song titles tell a story like lyrics. It's actually really neat, you just have to see all of them in sequence to get it. Anyway, this is a post-rock band with members of Isis and Neurosis, and they are good. This record came out this year and it's definitely in the running for my top ten list. I didn't really get into it at first, but it clicked REALLY HARD a couple of weeks ago. Enjoy! -Deniz Comments[4] |

Sun, 15 October 2006 In this episode:Sorry I can't talk on this one, I'm "busy."Converge's new record leaked, and it's literally the singular best album I've ever heard. Oh my fucking God. Expect tracks from it in the future. I went to a neat house show, read all about it at last.fm.This mixtape is of shit that is so fucking metal it feels like your eardrums are being gangraped. I hope you're into that shit.Tracks: Animosity - Holy ShacklesAnimosity are a really new band, and they play really fucking tight live, check them out if you can. They only have one vocalist, pay attention to his range.Arsis - The Face Of My InnocenceArsis is a fucking two-piece. Everything but the drums is recorded by one guy, and when they play live he shreds that shit just as hard as on record, and while screaming no less.Goatwhore - Alchemy Of The Black Sun CultThis song is both groovy AND death metal crushing like hell! How do they pull it off?1349 - I Am Abomination1349 are probably the best live band I've ever seen. Everything is as fast and as tight as this song, executed without a hitch. If you're unimpressed, go back and listen to the drums again. Holy fuck. They're from Norway, and 1349 is the year the black plague hit Norway. They like Satan a lot. The picture is of their guitarist. He has a shaved head now, and looks even more demon-y. Wristbands covered in nails, motherfucker! I AM... ABOMINATION!Necrophagist - Ignominious And PaleSo over-the-top! So good! Oh my God so good!Enjoy! -Deniz Comments[1] |

Fri, 3 March 2006 In this episode:Clann Zú are one of the single most amazing, viscerally intense bands I have ever heard. They broke up less than a year ago, leaving only two albums as a legacy. Nevertheless, these are two incredible works, forming a worthy legacy. Their first, Rua, is an eclectic mix of electronic music, goth-rock, and traditional gaelic music. Their second, Black Coats And Bandages, is a minimalist album of sparse ballads, occasionally erupting in furious bursts of noise, but mostly conveying their urgency quietly. The only noticeable similarity between the two is the downright epic voice of Declan de Barra, and the intensity of emotion, both personal and political. I've made you a 40 minute mixtape of my favorite Clann Zú songs, four from each album. If you like what you hear, and I can't imagine you not if you actually sit down and listen to this, please go out and buy their albums.Tracklist (albums alternating between Rua and Black Coats):Words For SnowOne Bedroom Apartment Five Thousand More From An Unholy Height RàRá There Will Be No Morning Copy Crashing To The Floor So Complicated Was The FallEnjoy! Sun, 23 January 2005 Well, just to throw you guys off, I did an unprofessional music-based show with interviews and political rants. Hope you enjoy it as much as the last show.I didn't stress the importance of sending me feedback in this show, but feedback for this episode is more important than it was in previous shows because it is a fundamentally different style than previous shows. So tell me if you like Brian, tell me if you don't like Brian, and especially tell me if you like the show better with one or two people.I found one little technical problem in this show. I'm recording with SoundFlower into GarageBand, and it seems to be catching only the left audio of songs. This wreaks havok on songs like "A Line In The Sand" by Q and not U that rely heavily on crisscrossing stereo harmonies. So if you could help me figure out what the problem is, that'd be great.-- MUSICS --Prints of Apple IslandStrike AnywherePaint It BlackQ and not UA Wilhelm ScreamThese Arms Are SnakesEnjoy.-Deniz Comments[2] |
Thu, 20 January 2005 Yea, I know, this is a couple days early. When I looked at my 250 megs of space, I realized that it's enough to do five shows a month, so here ya go. This one's a lot talkier. I had a lot on my mind. Show #4 will mark the show's permanent transition into a more music-oriented area. Anyway. -- musics -- The Show Is The Rainbow Same Old Crap Good With Guns Enjoy the show. -Deniz Comments[3] |

Tue, 11 January 2005 First, you should just know, this is not my regular blog. If you really want to hear random tidbits about my life, read my livejournal. I don't see why you would want to, but if you're a read-blogs-of-people-you-don't-know kinda dude, that's the link. This blog is only for production notes and show-related news. This is my first cast, and it's guest-co-hosted by Kel Gahagan. If you like him and want him on the show again, tell me. If you think he was awful, tell me and I won't bring him back. This early in the show, I'm relying entirely on feedback to tell if something's good or not. So post lots of comments here, or email me if you feel with it. All show-related email should have TNP in the subject line. In case you don't want to actually listen to this show, or want to know what it's about, here's a summary: -Nebraska sucks -I'm way too young to do a podcast -Video games are fun -It's boring to listen to people talk about shit you don't care about. -Speech meets are REALLY boring -So are show stories -Local music rules If you don't like the talking, listen to the music. If you don't like the music, listen to the talking. If you don't like either, fuck off. But only after sending me emails and leaving me comments about how I can make the show better. -- Music Played In This Show -- *permission was obtained from the artist for all music* Same Old Crap Better In Eleven Morningstar doesn't have it's own site. The link leads to suckapunchrecords.com, where you can find info on them thru the drop-down menu labeled "bands." -- Important Mentions -- Insomnia Radio In Over Your Head Enjoy the show. -Deniz Comments[1] |

In this episode:Clann Zú are one of the single most amazing, viscerally intense bands I have ever heard. If you like what you hear, and I can't imagine you not if you actually sit down and listen to this, please go out and buy their albums.Tracklist (albums alternating between Rua and Black Coats):Words For Snow

As a fellow mourner told me, a Bear Vs Shark greatest hits album would simply be their two albums repackaged in one case. However, due to time constraints, I've had to pick out my favorite ten songs. If you don't get both of their albums, you are a criminal.Tracks:
